About Jennifer
Hello! I’m Jennifer J. Allen, and I’m the founder, main brewer, and taste-tester behind Steep Bean. I’m an author, a dedicated brewer, and a full-time resident of the Golden State, where my little family and I try to live every day in pursuit of that perfect, mindful cup.
Since 2018, I’ve been sharing meticulously tested guides and transparent equipment reviews to help coffee and tea lovers gain confidence in their brewing rituals. My focus is on demystifying complex topics—from espresso extraction to the nuances of Japanese sencha—making them accessible to everyone.
My work has built a passionate community of thousands of brewers globally, and I’ve been honored to have my insights featured on popular food and lifestyle publications such as The Kitchn, Food & Wine, and prominent regional features in California Magazine.
My Expertise
My love for brewing started simply: a desire to recreate the quality of my favorite local California coffee shops at home. Growing up in a culture that values fresh ingredients and specialized craftsmanship, I became fiercely dedicated to understanding the why and how behind every perfect cup.
As a self-taught enthusiast turned certified professional, I spend countless hours testing gear and tasting beans—often right here in my California kitchen. Before a guide is posted or a piece of equipment is recommended, you can feel confident that I have already put it through rigorous, real-world use. This commitment to transparency and testing is why Steep Bean is a trusted resource for home brewers worldwide.
My Journey
I was born and raised in San Diego, California. I graduated from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) with a B.A. in Communication, which laid the groundwork for my career in creating clear, engaging content.
After working for several years in product marketing, my passion for the coffee and tea industry—especially the direct-trade and sustainability movements prevalent in California—grew too strong to ignore. Just a year and a half after launching Steep Bean in 2018, I transitioned to focusing on the site full-time, building it into the educational platform it is today. I’ve written, researched, and published more than a thousand deep-dive articles, and I’m currently working on my first book on The Essential Guide to Coffee and Tea Pairing.
My goal is to cultivate a reputation for reliable, science-backed instruction, ensuring that every article helps you achieve professional-level results, whether you’re simply making a daily pot of drip coffee or serving a specialized cold brew concentrate.
